Quran And The Bible: In The Light Of Science

- The Bible and Science
- Bucaille analyzed the Old and New Testaments scientifically. He discovered that many passages in the Bible reflected the scientific limitations of their time. For example:
- Creation Story: The Book of Genesis describes the creation of the universe in six days, mentioning “morning and evening” before the creation of the sun, which is scientifically inconsistent.
- Age of the Earth: The genealogies in the Bible suggest a universe only a few thousand years old, while science proves the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.
- Flood of Noah: The global flood described in the Bible is geologically and historically impossible; there is no worldwide sedimentary evidence for such an event.
- Human Creation: The Biblical idea that woman was created from the rib of man is symbolic but not scientific.
- Astronomy and Biology: The Bible reflects pre-scientific cosmology, such as the Earth being flat or the heavens as a “firmament” holding waters.

Qur’an and the Bible in the Light of Sciencen
Introduction
The book “The Qur’an and the Bible in the Light of Science” by Dr. Maurice Bucaille is a groundbreaking work that explores the relationship between revelation and scientific truth. It compares the Qur’an and the Bible—two foundational religious texts of humanity—and evaluates their contents in the context of modern scientific discoveries.
Bucaille’s central goal was to determine whether the scriptures are consistent with scientific facts known today. His findings led to a remarkable conclusion: while the Bible contains many passages that contradict modern science, the Qur’an is completely in harmony with scientific knowledge and even foretold scientific realities revealed centuries later.
1. Purpose and Approach of the Book
Dr. Bucaille began as a skeptic and medical professional who respected scientific inquiry. When he was given access to ancient mummies in Egypt for research, including that of Pharaoh Ramses II, he studied the historical events described in the Torah, Bible, and Qur’an.
This sparked his curiosity: could divine revelation and scientific truth coexist? His approach was neutral and analytical—not to defend religion blindly, but to assess whether these texts contained scientifically accurate statements or human errors.
He used the following method:
Compare Qur’anic and Biblical narratives of the same events.
Examine them under the microscope of modern science.
Identify which text aligns with empirical evidence.
2. The Bible and Science
Bucaille analyzed the Old and New Testaments scientifically. He discovered that many passages in the Bible reflected the scientific limitations of their time. For example:
Creation Story: The Book of Genesis describes the creation of the universe in six days, mentioning “morning and evening” before the creation of the sun, which is scientifically inconsistent.
Age of the Earth: The genealogies in the Bible suggest a universe only a few thousand years old, while science proves the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.
Flood of Noah: The global flood described in the Bible is geologically and historically impossible; there is no worldwide sedimentary evidence for such an event.
Human Creation: The Biblical idea that woman was created from the rib of man is symbolic but not scientific.
Astronomy and Biology: The Bible reflects pre-scientific cosmology, such as the Earth being flat or the heavens as a “firmament” holding waters.
From these examples, Bucaille concluded that while the Bible contains moral and spiritual truths, it cannot be seen as scientifically perfect. The human hands that wrote and edited it over centuries allowed errors to enter.
3. The Qur’an and Science
In contrast, Bucaille found the Qur’an, revealed over 1,400 years ago, to be astonishingly accurate when compared with modern scientific discoveries. He observed that the Qur’an was revealed in the 7th century to a man who could neither read nor write, in an age devoid of scientific knowledge—yet it contains truths about nature and the universe that modern science discovered only recently.
Some of the Qur’anic examples he analyzed include:
A. Embryology
Qur’an (23:12–14) describes the development of the embryo step by step:
“We created man from an extract of clay; then We made him as a drop in a place of settlement; then We made the drop into a clot; then the clot into a lump…”
These stages—zygote, clinging embryo, somite formation—are exactly as modern embryology describes them, verified only with microscopes in the 20th century.
B. The Expanding Universe
Qur’an (51:47):
“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.”
Only in the 20th century did astronomers confirm that the universe is continuously expanding—a concept that contradicts the old belief of a static cosmos.
C. The Origin of the Universe
Qur’an (21:30):
“Do not those who disbelieve see that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, then We separated them?”
This matches the Big Bang Theory, describing the universe’s origin from a single, unified mass that expanded and cooled.
D. Mountains and Geological Stability
Qur’an (78:6–7):
“Have We not made the earth as a bed and the mountains as pegs?”
Geological studies show that mountains have deep roots that stabilize the Earth’s crust, similar to “pegs” securing a tent.
E. Water Cycle
Qur’an (39:21) and others describe rain, evaporation, condensation, and river flow with precision.
This understanding came centuries before modern meteorology.
F. Seas and Barriers
Qur’an (55:19–20):
“He released the two seas meeting [side by side]; between them is a barrier they do not transgress.”
Oceanography has confirmed that when salt and fresh water meet, a barrier (pycnocline) prevents them from mixing completely.
G. Human Origin and Genetics
Qur’an (76:2):
“We created man from a drop of mingled fluid.”
This corresponds with the discovery that both sperm and ovum contribute equally to genetic formation.
Through these examples, Bucaille concluded that the Qur’an could not have been written by a human being in the 7th century. Its precision and compatibility with modern science show that it is of divine origin.
4. Historical Accuracy and Preservation
Bucaille also studied how the scriptures were preserved. He found that the Bible underwent numerous translations, editions, and textual alterations over centuries. Each version differed slightly in content and interpretation.
The Qur’an, however, was preserved word-for-word since its revelation. Written and memorized by thousands of people, it remained unchanged in its original Arabic form. Modern linguistic and historical studies confirm its perfect preservation, which ensures the accuracy of its message.
5. Relationship Between Revelation and Science
Dr. Bucaille’s work doesn’t portray religion and science as enemies but as complementary paths to truth.
Science explains how the universe works.
Revelation explains why it exists and what moral purpose lies behind it.
He argues that a true divine revelation must be free from scientific errors, since the same Creator designed both the laws of nature and the laws of morality.
Thus, the harmony between the Qur’an and science proves its authenticity.
6. Dr. Maurice Bucaille’s Conclusion
In his concluding remarks, Bucaille stated:
“The Qur’an’s statements on science are perfectly in accordance with modern knowledge, while the Bible’s are not. Therefore, the Qur’an cannot be the work of a man.”
He emphasized that Islam encourages the pursuit of knowledge, reflection, and scientific exploration as acts of worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) urged learning and investigation centuries before modern science emerged.
7. Lasting Impact of the Book
The book inspired millions worldwide to study the Qur’an scientifically.
It encouraged scholars to integrate faith with reason, showing that Islam is not opposed to science.
Bucaille’s work became a reference for comparative religion and Islamic apologetics.
Many scientists, upon reading the Qur’an through his perspective, found that science affirms the message of Islam rather than contradicts it.
Conclusion
“The Qur’an and the Bible in the Light of Science” is not just a comparative study—it is a journey from doubt to faith. Dr. Maurice Bucaille, through scientific evidence and honest analysis, demonstrated that the Qur’an is the Word of God, unchanged and perfect, while the Bible, though spiritually rich, contains traces of human alteration.
This book teaches us that science and faith are allies, not opposites, and that the Qur’an’s timeless wisdom continues to enlighten minds even in the age of scientific discovery.

- Maulana Wahiduddin Khan stresses that the Qur’an addresses the human heart before it addresses human actions.
- It is concerned with shaping the inner self, which in turn manifests in ethical behavior, compassionate treatment of others, and a sense of accountability before God.
- This perspective underscores the Qur’an’s timeless relevance, showing that its message is universal and not confined to a specific culture, era, or society.

- Maulana Khan explains that the Qur’an presents life as a trust (Amanah) from God, and human beings are accountable for how they fulfill this trust.

- The Qur’an encourages reflection, personal accountability, and the pursuit of knowledge to live a life aligned with divine guidance.
